in August 2011, the New Haven/Leon Sister City Project brought TONYC to Goyena, a small town of 400 outside the city of Leon, to share practices with teachers, teenagers, popular theatre artists and the town governing council. We led a 5-day Theatre of the Oppressed training with 40 community members, culminating in a outdoor performance and dialogue about contamination by the sugar cane plantations, lack of access to education and discrimination against rural populations. In June 2012, Artistic Director Katy Rubin will return to work with community members on Joker Training and leadership development, in order to kickstart several independent Forum Theatre Troupes in Goyena. For more info, go to the New Haven/Leon website.

In the winter of 2011, Katy Rubin traveled to the United Kingdom to exchange practices with Cardboard Citizens and Mind the Gap, two British theatres that work with homeless and learning-disabled actors, respectively, to enhance her Theatre of the Oppressed work with those communities in New York. This was a project of the Theatre Communications Ground Global Connections On the Road grant; click here to read more about her work there.

Artistic Director Katy Rubin traveled to Israel as a Shapiro Family Fellow and visited with Combatants for Peace, a binational movement of Palestinians and Israelis using Theatre of the Oppressed, among other tools, to end the cycle of violence. Katy and CFP member Uri Noy-Meir co-facilitated a TO workshop with families from Bethlehem and other CFP members. Check out Combatants for Peace here.
India
Jana Sanskriti is a national movement of Theatre of the Oppressed in India, over 25 years old and reaching 200,000 citizens each year. In December 2010, TONYC traveled to Jana Sanskriti's 4th International Theatre of the Oppressed Festival, called Muktadhara. There we trained with Sanjoy Ganguly and other international TO practitioners; met artists and activists from 29 countries; participated in and watched countless performances; and walked on stilts in a parade throughout Kolkata in honor of Theatre of the Oppressed. Brazil
In 2008, Katy Rubin spent three months training with Augusto Boal and the 6 Jokers who had worked with him for over 20 years, at the Center for Theatre of the Oppressed--Rio. At CTO--Rio, work included training new Jokers across Brazil; rehearsals with popular troupes in mental hospitals, prisons, and favelas; attending forum performances by a troupe of domestic workers among others; and participating in many facilitator trainings.
