TONYC in the News

From the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC):

Find out how Katy Rubin, Founder of Theatre of the Oppressed NYC was            able to marry her artistic side with her entrepreneurial side by enrolling in
and graduating from the NYCEDC, NYFA Artist as Entrepreneur Boot
Camp. It's a fascinating story of how, with training and mentoring, art and
business can live hand-in-hand, and make it in New York City.

The Actors aren’t actors, the plays are really meant as dress rehearsals for real life, and before the curtains come down the audience takes the stage as ‘spec-actors’.
NY DAILY NEWS

These brainstorming sessions are not abstract. The Playwrights, producers and actors are all people who are marginalized in one way or another, They are homeless people with AIDS, victims of domestic abuse and undocumented immigrants.
TIKKUN DAILY

With chapters in 70 countries, Theatre of the Oppressed is an “an interactive, physical, and playful tool used to investigate situations in which we are denied our basic rights, personally and collectively,” according to its website. The audience gets to see scenarios from oppressed people’s lives, feel a solidarity with the actors, and mull possible solutions.
